Racism in Kenya a party factor

John Stauffer in Giants: The Parallel Lives of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln

When Lincoln saw Fredrick Douglass at his second inauguration (after two policemen tried to prevent Douglass from entering), Lincoln took him by the hand and said, “Here comes my friend,” adding that, “There is no man in the country whose opinion I value more.”

That was not the case this past Saturday 7th at the plush Gigiri suburb. I was invited to a party by an Italian acquaintance (….) On reaching the spot, it was not hard to notice in the thick six figure salary darkness. That there were almost 200 diplomat car plates. Reflective neons, dimly lit through the fresh Gigiri air .Subtle faded noise from the bungalow. The noise of the party, people having fun!

With me was Catangaras* (foreign correspondent New china) and Scandollars* (Financial director of where?) as requested to carry our own bottles we had a Johnny Walker black to grace the occasion.

I spotted a few local rappers, sprinkled in the midst of a predominantly foreign crowd, characterized by diplomats, international interns, consulate reps et al basically a ‘mzungu’ party.

Having attended a number I was privy to the phases of these gatherings. which often morphs into a densely composed dance floor full of people moving to electro indie music mostly. The air is usually tolerant, gay pride paraded boldly and expression of whaterver trait is by any means fully explored.

This day was different…this kid came over panting to where I was seated, he had a look on his face, as if he had woken up out of a nightmare. I don’t know his name, just that we had been breaking ealier and he couldn’t wait. I was talking to a beautiful broad. Selling her my insurance policy of no heart breaks. I had to kill that. He yelled.. “Kora! Kora ! please come see what they’ve done to Obama.”. 220px-barack_obamaI tried to dismiss him but he insisted, actually dragging me off my seat. Confused, I made my way jostling with the crowd of white folk. Shock… at the dance floor…gazing at the projector that was now displaying a porn flick with a superimposed picture of Barrack Obama, flickering on the frame!!!!

Pushing aside whoever was infront of me…I rushed to the DJ’s deck and demanded to know, why ? why? Why they were demeaning a great man to that extent. The DJs, all Italian, mumbled gibberish that I wasn’t able to interpret. I ran my fingers on the mac air keyboard raising hell…not understanding why do they have Obama’s picture pasted on a porn flick?

The host requested me to follow him outside.. at this point, hardcore rappers who had been standing next to the DJ deck gladly watching the porn with Obama’s picture on it decided it was time to quell me. I was even more angered by them for they chose to ignore what affects them. They opted to be condescending and failed to point out what was being done and is wrong. All the black people in the room did not want to burn their mzungu connection. I made them shut it down.. thats when I walked out…At this moment *In my head* I made a bow to Martin Luther King,Malcolm X,Marcus Garvey,Patrice Lumumba and Barrack Obama…I told them in my silent prayer and humble accord it’s the least I could do. To restore their dignity.

(Loud music playing…People still dancing….rappers tapping Onyango on the back asking him to calm down)

Outside on the front pouch…

Lorenzo: Listen my brother as an Italian Catholic, I was brought up to acknowledge and respect freedom of choice.

Onyango Kora: Really well they aint no choice here coz if you put Barracks picture up there am bringing your place down.

kill 'em allLorenzo: Am sorry..i really am.but you don’t understand in my house (He steps forward as if nudging a weapon) I don’t do what a guest doesn’t want me to do.

Onyango Kora: You better step the fuck back coz imma twist your neck with that attempted Sicilian death threat bitch.

Lorenzo: Am sorry man..please listen
Breathing heavily consumed with anger grabs Lorenzo’s throat…..

Onyango Kora: then why didn’t you stick a picture of Bulersconi on your porn flick?

(From the crowd woman approaches in desperation….Please please..please stop it) nudges between the host and aggravated visitor..

Host and hostess argue in Italian before hostess approaches Onyango..
She rubs her hands on her black hair blushing from the rush…says in panic..

‘I am afraid you are going to fight Lorenzo,i am scared i dont want a fight’..

She continues to inform me that she is very sorry about my perception of what was displayed from the projector. Then she adds remorsefully, “But it’s the kind of thing you can only experience if you have consumed, say some weed or a lot of miraa” huh! Gauging my consciousness, she was this one….Peep her stance… she was moving very close to me.. and not that am paranoid but why? I was literally pacing away but she kept following me…I smelt trouble,if I were to nullify the distance…Then it would turn into, “Muli was making out with my wife….”

I told my homeboys we need to hit the road…coz this Italian cats would pull a soprano on a Muli.

So for how long? Silvio Berlusconi threw one at Obama followed by former Spanish Prime minister Jose Maria Aznar. With this recent development in Kenya will this racial onslaughts ever end?
